South Africa's National Party set up the apartheid system, which was a separation of racial groups throughout South Africa. These racial groups included the whites, blacks, mixed, and the Indians. In 1960, the African National Congress was banned because it had communist views and participated in anti-apartheid activities. This did not stop the ANC from trying to end the apartheid. They continued to fight against the government and most of them were put in jail for these actions. This included Nelson Mandela. Most of the apartheid actions were abolished in 1991 and the country started working towards a new constitution.
